Microverse program time does not change

In Spring and Fall clocks change in some countries to have more daylight during people's waking hours. This looks different in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres but generally means moving the clocks by one hour. Different countries change their clocks in different weeks and not all countries participate in daylight savings.

At Microverse, we have two main schedules, UTC-6 and UTC+1. UTC (or GMT) time does not change with daylight saving time, so the program time itself never changes.

What does the time change mean for you?

  • If your country's clocks DO change in Spring and Fall: The time difference with your program time will change when the time changes. This will mean you're shifting the times at which you start and end your Microverse work (usually by 1 hour).

  • If your country's clocks do NOT change in Spring and Fall: There is no change for you. Your program time remains the same.

There are many useful tools to figure out what this looks like for you. We really like this tool because of it's simplicity. You can 1) add the Microverse schedule that you've signed up for (e.g. UTC-6),  2) change the date to your start date (e.g. Mar 23, 2020), 3) add your current location (e.g. Madrid, Spain), and 4) change the time on the UTC box to reflect the program start and end times (8 am and 5:15 pm) to see what those translate to in your local time. If you are expecting a daylight saving change to happen in your city soon after your start date, then adjust the date (to after the time change takes place) to see how that will affect you. Here are some examples for those of you who are in a country that experiences daylight saving time.

Example 1: Country WITH* Daylight Saving Time (🌷Spring Change🌷)

Mexico is one of those countries which uses daylight saving time. Here is what a Spring time change looks like for someone in Mexico City, Mexico who is following Microverse's UTC-6 schedule (8 am - 5:15 pm UTC-6).

Before Mexico's Spring Daylight Savings Time Change: The local start time for the student is 8 am.

After Mexico's Spring Daylight Savings Time Change: The local start time for the student is now 1 hour later (9 am).

*Someone in a country WITHOUT daylight saving time changes (e.g. Colombia) should expect no changes to their Microverse start and end times throughout the year.

Example 2: Country WITH* Daylight Saving Time (🍁Fall Change 🍁)

Germany is one of those countries which uses daylight saving time. Here is what a Fall time change looks like for someone in Berlin, Germany who is following Microverse's UTC+1 schedule (8 am - 5:15 pm UTC+1).

Before Germany's Fall Daylight Savings Time Change: The local start time for the student is 9 am.

After Germany's Fall Daylight Savings Time Change: The local start time for the student is now 1 hour earlier (8 am).

*Someone in a country WITHOUT daylight saving time changes (e.g. Kenya) should expect no changes to their Microverse start and end times throughout the year.
